Our four-year BA in Philosophy and Sociology (including foundation year) helps you build expertise in these subjects while strengthening your academic abilities. The foundation year (Year Zero) provides essential grounding before you progress to three additional years of undergraduate study at Essex. Opt for our five-year program to include a year of international study in your fourth year.
This program begins with a foundation year (Year Zero), followed by three or four years of study, depending on whether you select the study abroad option. In Year Zero, you'll explore three subjects related to your degree alongside a mandatory academic skills module, with extra English language support available for non-native speakers.
From day one, you'll join Essex as a full member of our global community, studying at the UK's most internationally diverse campus university.
After successfully completing Year Zero through our Essex Pathways Department, you'll advance to your degree studies with the School of Philosophical, Historical and Interdisciplinary Studies.
Philosophy explores fundamental questions about human existence, examining concepts like reality, knowledge, ethics, justice, and beauty. Sociology investigates social dynamics, relationships, and structures that shape everyday life, analyzing how individuals, communities, and cultures develop and change.
You'll have the unique chance to study both fields while learning from two of the UK's top departments: our School of Philosophical, Historical and Interdisciplinary Studies and our Department of Sociology.
