Our BA Modern Languages program (including a foundation year) welcomes both Home and EU students. This option is ideal if you don't currently meet the entry criteria for the standard three-year degree but seek a program that enhances both your subject expertise and academic abilities.
Spanning four years, this course begins with a foundation year (Year Zero), followed by three additional years of study. Your Year Zero curriculum includes four academic subjects aligned with your chosen path, plus a mandatory academic skills component.
Upon successfully completing Year Zero through our Essex Pathways Department, you'll advance to the Department of Language and Linguistics to finish your degree. The program allows you to study up to three languages, selecting from French, German, Italian, and Spanish at beginner or advanced levels, with Portuguese available at intermediate level. These language studies complement specialized modules covering cultural and professional competencies.
Since these languages are highly valued in international business, we train you to near-fluency, preparing many graduates for successful careers with global organizations seeking language professionals.
Beyond language acquisition, our curriculum includes modules exploring worldwide cultures, histories, and political systems, enabling you to gain deep cultural understanding alongside linguistic proficiency.
