Master the fundamentals of teaching languages while immersing yourself in the process of learning one. This program is perfect for aspiring English teachers working with non-native speakers, but the expertise you gain will also open doors to diverse career paths in media, administration, business, and education—essentially any field requiring critical thinking, independent research, and effective communication skills. Your studies will cover essential aspects of English language and teaching methodology, including: Linguistics and sociolinguistics English language structure Second language acquisition Practical TEFL training Additionally, you can study up to two languages from our selection: French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, or Mandarin Chinese, achieving near-fluency in at least one. These language skills make our graduates highly sought after by international companies seeking multilingual professionals. Beginners can take advantage of our fully-funded intensive summer course. Study Abroad Choose between two exciting year-abroad options: study at one of our prestigious partner universities while continuing your language immersion, or work as a language assistant to gain professional international experience. Both options enhance your cultural awareness, academic growth, and employability by demonstrating adaptability and organizational skills. Full-year abroad students pay only 15% of standard Essex tuition fees with no additional costs at the host institution. Placement Year Alternatively, opt for a placement year to live and work overseas, fully engaging with another culture and language. While you'll arrange your own placement, you'll receive full support from our department and Employability and Careers Center throughout the process.
A-levels: BBB - BBC or 120 - 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of 2 full A-levels, including B in one essay based subject.
BTEC: DDM - DMM or 120 - 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of the equivalent of 2 full A-levels. 
Combined qualifications on the UCAS tariff: 120 - 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of 2 full A levels or equivalent. 
IB: 30 - 29 points or three Higher Level certificates with 555-554.
IB Career-related Programme: We consider combinations of IB Diploma Programme courses with BTECs or other qualifications. 
QAA-approved Access to HE Diploma: 6 level 3 credits at Distinction and 39 level 3 credits at Merit, depending on subject studied - advice on acceptability can be provided
T-levels: We consider T-levels on a case-by-case basis, depending on subject studied. The offer for most courses is Distinction overall. Depending on the course applied for there may be additional requirements, which may include a specific grade in the Core.
IELTS- 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each component TOEFL IBT- 76 overall, with a minimum of 18 in reading, 17 in listening, 20 in speaking and 17 in writing
