Our four-year BA in Modern History and Politics (including foundation year) is designed for students whose current qualifications don't meet the entry requirements for the standard three-year program. This pathway helps build both subject knowledge and academic skills to prepare you for degree-level study.

The program consists of a foundation year followed by three years of specialized study. Your foundation year includes three subject-specific modules along with core academic skills training, plus optional English language support for international students.

From day one, you'll join Essex's vibrant global community at the UK's most internationally diverse campus university.

After successfully completing your foundation year through Essex Pathways, you'll advance to study with our renowned History Department.

In history modules, you'll examine how ideas, cultures and economic systems have interacted across Western societies over the past two centuries. The curriculum connects contemporary concepts like political freedom, globalization and modern sexuality to their 18th and 19th century origins.

Our program uniquely reveals political dimensions in unexpected areas of life while developing your analytical skills. You'll master political science methodologies to examine both the realities of political systems and their ideal potential.
