Our BA Linguistics program (including a foundation year) welcomes both Home and EU students. This option is ideal if you don't currently meet the entry criteria for our three-year course and seek a program that enhances both your subject expertise and academic abilities.
Spanning four years, this course begins with a foundation year (Year Zero), followed by three additional years of study. In Year Zero, you'll explore four academic subjects related to your chosen field alongside a mandatory academic skills module.
From day one, you'll join Essex's vibrant global community, studying at the UK's most internationally diverse campus university.
Upon successfully completing Year Zero through our Essex Pathways Department, you'll advance to the Department of Language and Linguistics to finish your degree. Our department leads the UK in research impact for modern languages and linguistics (Grade Point Average, Research Excellence Framework 2021) and ranks among the world's top 150, placing 11th nationally in the QS World University Rankings by Subject (2023).
This program provides comprehensive training in linguistics while offering significant flexibility. As a growing field, linguistics influences psychology, philosophy, education, and artificial intelligence, with practical applications ranging from human rights to computer-assisted language learning and analyzing professional communication in medical, employment, and legal contexts.
