Our BA Liberal Arts (including Foundation Year) is ideal if you don't currently meet the entry requirements for our three-year arts and humanities programs but seek an academic pathway to develop your skills. Available to UK and EU students, this four-year program begins with a Foundation Year (Year Zero) through Essex Pathways Department, followed by three years in the School of Philosophical, Historical and Interdisciplinary Studies.

During Year Zero, you'll explore subjects like Film Analysis, Text and Image Interpretation, and Epistemology. Successful completion allows progression to various degrees, including BA Liberal Arts, BA Philosophy, or BA History.

This four-year BA Liberal Arts program provides foundational knowledge and academic skills during Year Zero, preparing you for undergraduate study. A five-year option includes a study abroad year.

After Year Zero, you'll join the School of Philosophical, Historical and Interdisciplinary Studies. Our BA Liberal Arts offers interdisciplinary study with major options in History, Literature, Art History, Philosophy, Politics, Media Studies, or Sociology.

You'll examine humanities' historical roots, challenge conventional perspectives, and study transformative texts. Flexible module choices span literature, film, philosophy, art history, linguistics, politics, sociology, and languages.

Explore diverse topics like cinematic interpretations of relationships, philosophical inquiries about existence, artistic masterpieces, or language studies. Tailor your curriculum to your interests while engaging with thought-provoking ideas that foster critical thinking and social awareness.

The five-year version includes a fourth year abroad, offering international academic experience while maintaining the same curriculum. You'll pay only 15% of Essex tuition during your overseas year, with no fees to the host institution.
