To what extent does your country shape your perspectives on politics, history, cinema, and pop culture? We provide an opportunity to broaden your horizons by deeply engaging with influential Hispanic and Lusophone cultures worldwide. You'll have the chance to learn up to three languages from our selection: French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese, with at least one language studied to Proficiency level. Mandarin Chinese is available for one academic year. Throughout this three-year program, you'll develop practical language skills while gaining profound insights into some of the world's most dynamic societies. Our department also hosts ESCALA, an internationally significant collection of Latin American art. Starting with a comprehensive overview of the region's history in your first year - spanning from pre-Columbian civilizations to modern times - our flexible curriculum lets you concentrate on subjects that spark your interest, including: Modern Latin American art and culture Latin America's political and economic evolution Indigenous matters in the region Caribbean literary works We provide a fully-funded month-long summer intensive course for beginners starting a new language. Ranked first in the UK for research impact in modern languages and linguistics (REF 2021), we welcome students seeking global perspectives, fascinated by human communication, and pursuing degrees with practical applications in our world-class department. Career Prospects UK and international employers face shortages of multilingual graduates beyond English speakers. As an Essex languages graduate, you'll gain significant advantages, achieving fluency or high competence in up to two languages. Our alumni pursue diverse careers as educators, translators, administrators, journalists, and more. Their language skills open doors in banking, media, education, tourism, and multinational corporations. For instance, one recent graduate edits a Spanish newspaper, while another teaches modern languages in Southampton.
A-levels: BBB - BBC or 120 - 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of 2 full A-levels, including B in one essay based subject.
BTEC: DDM - DMM or 120 - 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of the equivalent of 2 full A-levels. 
Combined qualifications on the UCAS tariff: 120 - 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of 2 full A levels or equivalent. 
IB: 30 - 29 points or three Higher Level certificates with 555-554.
IB Career-related Programme: We consider combinations of IB Diploma Programme courses with BTECs or other qualifications. 
QAA-approved Access to HE Diploma: 6 level 3 credits at Distinction and 39 level 3 credits at Merit, depending on subject studied - advice on acceptability can be provided
T-levels: We consider T-levels on a case-by-case basis, depending on subject studied. The offer for most courses is Distinction overall. Depending on the course applied for there may be additional requirements, which may include a specific grade in the Core.
