Language forms the foundation of our thinking, connections, and societies. It serves as the medium for sharing information – whether it's asking someone out for coffee, presenting groundbreaking research, or resolving international conflicts.

In our BA Language Studies program, you'll achieve fluency in one or multiple modern languages offered at Essex, including French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese. These language studies can be combined with specialized modules that develop both cultural understanding and professional competencies.
Businesses and institutions across the UK and worldwide face challenges in finding university-educated professionals with multilingual capabilities beyond English.

Graduating with a modern languages degree from Essex gives you a significant competitive edge. You'll develop fluent speaking and writing abilities in up to four languages. Such linguistic expertise is highly sought-after and applicable to virtually any career path.

Our alumni pursue careers as educators, interpreters, managers, and media professionals. Their prized language abilities have opened doors in various sectors such as finance, entertainment, journalism, teaching, and hospitality, along with opportunities at numerous domestic and global organizations.
