Why do some advocate for removing statues while others condemn it as vandalism? How do we distinguish between reinterpreting history and altering it? Can we find common ground between these conflicting perspectives on historical legacy? Our BA History and Heritage program explores the societal and political factors influencing how we engage with history daily and examines the stories behind cultural heritage. This interdisciplinary course combines history, art history, and museum studies to examine the past through multiple lenses. Students can explore diverse historical periods and locations, from Tudor England to Nazi Germany, from Maoist China to contemporary multicultural Britain. Alongside historical studies, you'll examine ethical and legal heritage discussions, preservation methods, communication strategies, and how different communities value heritage. In your final year, you'll create public-facing historical content - valuable experience for heritage sector careers. This degree will transform how you see the world and teach you to share those insights with others. Choose from varied optional modules covering topics like: Global historical perspectives Centuries of migration to Britain Curatorial practices Digital art and media Historical education Our internationally recognized faculty create a truly global learning environment. We offer exceptional local history resources, including strong connections with the renowned Essex Record Office. Expand your horizons through our study abroad options. Spend a term or year at one of our partner universities worldwide. The four-year program includes this international experience while maintaining the same curriculum as the three-year version. Studying abroad develops cultural awareness, enhances your academic profile, and demonstrates valuable skills to future employers. Consider adding a placement year to your studies. While you'll need to secure your own placement, you'll receive support from both your department and our career services. Placement students pay just 20% of standard tuition fees for that year.
