Our four-year BA in History and Criminology (including foundation year) is designed for students whose current qualifications don't meet the entry requirements for the three-year program. This pathway strengthens both your subject knowledge and academic skills to prepare you for successful degree-level study.
The program begins with a foundation year, followed by three years of specialized study. Your foundation year includes three subject-specific modules along with core academic skills training, plus English language support for international students.
From day one, you'll join our vibrant Essex community, studying at the UK's most internationally diverse campus university.
After successfully completing your foundation year through Essex Pathways, you'll advance to the full BA History and Criminology degree. Starting in year one, you'll examine the intersections between historical studies, crime history, and criminological theory.
Criminology tackles society's most urgent challenges, examining crime, justice systems, and punishment within broader social frameworks. You'll investigate diverse topics ranging from digital crime influences to terrorism, migration issues, and societal control methods. As a history student, you'll analyze early modern and contemporary periods, investigating how political, social and cultural transformations affect individuals and communities. The degree offers extensive optional modules covering both local and global perspectives.
You'll learn from internationally recognized scholars in a truly global academic environment. Our strong connections with the exceptional Essex Record Office provide unique opportunities for local historical research.
