Our BA Film Studies (including Foundation Year) is ideal if you don't currently meet the entry requirements for our three-year arts and humanities programs but seek a course that enhances your academic skills. Available to UK and EU students, this four-year program begins with a Foundation Year (Year Zero) through our Essex Pathways Department, followed by three years in the Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies.
In Year Zero, you'll follow our Arts and Humanities Pathway, exploring subjects like Film Analysis, Text and Image, and Theory of Knowledge. Successful completion allows you to choose your specialization, including BA Film Studies, BA Literature, BA History, or other related courses.
At Essex, you'll study both film history/theory and practical production, blending critical analysis with hands-on filmmaking. Production modules help refine your skills while deepening your academic understanding of cinema.
You'll examine diverse film genres, eras, and global perspectives—from Hollywood to independent films, documentaries, and television. Alongside this, you'll gain practical experience in production and management, preparing you for careers in film and TV.
We cultivate tomorrow's creative leaders—filmmakers, scholars, and thinkers with a global outlook:
By graduation, you'll have a comprehensive portfolio showcasing your versatility and creative potential to employers.
Our flexible curriculum focuses on film while offering options in literature, creative writing, journalism, and drama from our department. Weekly schedules typically include one-hour lectures and seminars, though formats vary by module.
All applications for degree courses with a foundation year (Year Zero) will be considered individually, whether you:
think you might not have the grades to enter the first year of a degree course;
have non-traditional qualifications or experience (e.g. you haven’t studied A-levels or a BTEC);
are returning to university after some time away from education; or
are looking for more support during the transition into university study.
Standard offer: Our standard offer is 72 UCAS tariff points from at least two full A-levels, or equivalent.
Examples of the above tariff may include:
A-levels: DDD
BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma: MMP
T-levels: Pass with E in core
If you are unsure whether you meet the entry criteria, please get in touch for advice.
Mature applicants and non-traditional academic backgrounds:
We welcome applications from mature students (over 21) and students with non-traditional academic backgrounds (might not have gone on from school to take level 3 qualifications). We will consider your educational and employment history, along with your personal statement and reference, to gain a rounded view of your suitability for the course.
International applicants:
Essex Pathways Department is unable to accept applications from international students. Foundation pathways for international students are available at the University of Essex International College and are delivered and awarded by Kaplan, in partnership with the University of Essex. Successful completion will enable you to progress to the relevant degree course at the University of Essex.
