Our four-year BA in Film and Drama (including foundation year) is ideal if you don't currently meet the entry requirements for the standard three-year program and seek a curriculum that enhances both your subject expertise and academic abilities to boost your performance.
This extended program begins with a foundation year (Year Zero), followed by three years of specialized study. In Year Zero, you'll explore three academic subjects aligned with your chosen field alongside a mandatory academic skills module, with optional English language support for international students.
From day one, you'll join Essex's vibrant global community at the UK's most internationally diverse campus university.
Upon successfully completing Year Zero through our Essex Pathways Department, you'll advance to the Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies to finish your degree.
This program caters to creative minds. Graduates emerge prepared to enter film, theater, production roles, and various arts, media, education, and creative industry careers. Beyond practical skills, we provide comprehensive theoretical grounding in both stage and screen disciplines.
Your studies will cover dramatic themes including gender, identity, tragedy, human rights, and playwriting. Film modules address directing, screenwriting, classic and contemporary works, plus diverse screen media from cinema to digital platforms.
You'll develop technical competencies in theater and film production - from design and stage management to cinematography, editing, and filmmaking. While maintaining rigorous academic writing standards typical of Humanities degrees, assessments also value your creative output, performances, and technical abilities.
