Can museum exhibitions drive societal transformation? Who determines the narratives presented in our cultural institutions? How do we protect endangered heritage from conflicts or environmental crises? What ethical dilemmas arise when conserving and showcasing artifacts from diverse cultures? How do curators and heritage professionals address these considerations when creating exhibitions? This program equips you with the skills to forge meaningful connections between visual culture, heritage studies, human rights, and wider sociopolitical contexts. The BA in Curating, Heritage and Human Rights enhances your understanding of curation while incorporating human rights studies, empowering you to champion individual and community rights, social equity, and meaningful change. You'll explore critical heritage studies, examining preservation ethics, legal frameworks, and questions of public engagement and representation. Key study areas include: - Evolution of museum institutions - Ethical challenges in curation - Principles of heritage conservation - Human rights in social contexts - Digital innovations in museums - Emerging technologies in heritage presentation No prior art or art history qualifications are required. We value students who approach visual culture with original viewpoints and inquisitive perspectives. Essex stands out for its academic excellence, ranking 3rd nationally for art history research (REF2021). Unlike many UK programs, you'll learn directly from leading scholars from your first year. Global Opportunities Expand your horizons through our international exchange program. The four-year option includes a year abroad at one of our partner institutions while maintaining the same curriculum as the three-year degree. Professional Placements Upon enrollment, you may opt to include a work placement year. While you'll secure your own placement, you'll receive comprehensive support from both your department and our dedicated placements team. During a placement year, you'll pay just 20% of standard tuition fees.
