Our four-year BA Curating (including foundation year) is ideal if you don't currently meet the entry requirements for our three-year program but want to build both subject expertise and academic skills. We also offer a five-year option that includes a study abroad experience in your fourth year.
This program begins with a foundation year (Year Zero), followed by either three or four additional years of study, depending on whether you select the study abroad option. During Year Zero, you'll take three subject-specific courses alongside a mandatory academic skills module, with English language support available for non-native speakers.
Upon successfully completing Year Zero through our Essex Pathways Department, you'll continue your studies with the School of Philosophical, Historical and Interdisciplinary Studies.
Our BA Curating blends theoretical learning with practical museum and gallery experience. In class, you'll explore key developments in art history - crucial knowledge for aspiring curators. You'll also examine exhibition design theory and history, focusing on how curatorial choices influence visitor experiences with displayed artworks and objects.
You'll have hands-on opportunities at ESCALA (Essex Collection of Art from Latin America), Europe's premier Latin American art collection. These practical experiences will not only develop your installation skills but also demonstrate how curatorial decisions shape the narratives created by grouped artworks.
The expanding visual arts and culture sectors offer growing career potential, and our program prepares graduates to succeed in this dynamic field.
Graduates typically find opportunities in museums, galleries, and auction houses, pursuing careers in curation, museum education, programming, or arts marketing. The degree also provides foundational skills for gallery management, PR work, or careers in fashion, publishing, and event planning.
To prepare students for museum and gallery careers - our graduates' primary employment sector - we offer specialized courses in museum studies, exhibition theory, and gallery practices. Our curatorial employability module helps students develop proactive career strategies for their post-university lives.
