At Essex, you'll gain a comprehensive grounding in visual culture's history: exploring both established artistic and architectural traditions while uncovering overlooked aspects like medical photography, tattoos, or protest artifacts. You'll also cultivate the ability to draw innovative connections between visual culture, interdisciplinary developments, and wider societal influences.
No prior Art History A-Level is required for our program. We maintain that the most insightful art historians approach their subjects with fresh perspectives and original viewpoints.
The visual arts and cultural sectors now play a vital role in global economies, and our art history alumni graduate equipped to seize these expanding opportunities.
Career paths for our graduates span diverse fields including: museum and gallery work, auction houses, educational institutions, marketing and advertising, and digital media. Our program also prepares students for entrepreneurial ventures like gallery ownership, specialized arts law, PR representation, and roles in nonprofit organizations, fashion, and publishing.
To specifically support students pursuing museum and gallery careers—our most popular employment sector—we provide specialized annual modules covering exhibition theory, museum practices, and gallery operations. Our curatorial employability module further helps students envision and prepare for their professional futures beyond university.
