Our BA Art History (including Foundation Year) is ideal if your current qualifications don't meet the entry requirements for our three-year arts and humanities programs, offering a pathway to enhance your academic skills. Available to both UK and EU students, this four-year program begins with a Foundation Year (Year Zero) through our Essex Pathways Department, followed by three years of specialized study. During Year Zero, you'll explore our Arts and Humanities Pathway, engaging with subjects like Film, Text, and Image Analysis, as well as Theory of Knowledge. Successful completion allows progression to various degree options, including BA Art History, BA Philosophy, or BA History, among others. At Essex, you'll build a comprehensive understanding of visual culture—studying both renowned art and architecture alongside overlooked forms like medical photography, tattoos, and protest artifacts. You'll learn to draw connections between visual culture, other disciplines, and broader societal influences. The program equips you with the skills to transform your passion for art and visual culture into meaningful scholarly insights. You'll gain expertise in art history and visual culture, examining the ideas and contexts behind their creation and reception. For those interested in curatorial or museum careers, we offer specialized modules covering exhibition theory, gallery practices, and practical aspects like artwork installation and promotion. Unique among UK art history programs, you'll learn from expert faculty starting in your first year. Our campus also features ESCALA, a collection of over 750 Latin American artworks.
All applications for degree courses with a foundation year (Year Zero) will be considered individually, whether you:
think you might not have the grades to enter the first year of a degree course;
have non-traditional qualifications or experience (e.g. you haven’t studied A-levels or a BTEC);
are returning to university after some time away from education; or
are looking for more support during the transition into university study.

Mature applicants and non-traditional academic backgrounds:

We will consider your educational and employment history, along with your personal statement and reference, to gain a rounded view of your suitability for the course.
International applicants:
Essex Pathways Department is unable to accept applications from international students.
