Our four-year BA in Film Studies and Art History (including a foundation year) is designed for students whose qualifications don't currently meet the entry requirements for our three-year program. This pathway helps build both subject knowledge and academic skills to prepare you for higher education. The five-year option includes a study abroad opportunity in your fourth year.
The program begins with a foundation year (Year Zero), followed by three years of specialized study. During Year Zero, you'll explore three academic subjects related to your chosen field alongside a core academic skills module, with additional English language support available for international students.
From day one, you'll join Essex's vibrant global community at one of the UK's most internationally diverse campus universities.
After successfully completing Year Zero through our Essex Pathways Department, you'll continue your studies with the School of Philosophical, Historical and Interdisciplinary Studies.
Our innovative curriculum incorporates the latest developments in visual media studies, offering diverse approaches to film analysis. You'll examine various film genres, historical periods, and national cinemas while developing expertise in visual communication and film production techniques.
Practical filmmaking modules, taught by industry professionals, provide hands-on training in all aspects of production - from cinematography and editing to scriptwriting and production management.
In art history, you'll survey broad historical movements before specializing in areas of interest. The program covers everything from classical paintings to contemporary visual culture, examining diverse media including architecture, photography, performance art, and sculpture. This visual literacy complements your film studies, enabling deeper analysis of cinematic aesthetics across different production and reception contexts.
