Our four-year BA in Art History and History (including a foundation year) is ideal if you don't currently meet the entry requirements for the standard three-year program. This pathway strengthens both your subject knowledge and academic abilities to prepare you for success. The five-year option includes a study abroad opportunity in your fourth year.
The program begins with a foundation year (Year Zero), followed by three or four additional years depending on whether you opt for international study. Year Zero includes three subject-specific modules plus essential academic skills training, with English language support available for non-native speakers.
From day one, you'll join Essex's vibrant global community at the UK's most internationally diverse campus university.
After completing Year Zero through our Essex Pathways Department, you'll continue your studies with the School of Philosophical, Historical and Interdisciplinary Studies.
This unique program explores the dynamic relationship between history and visual arts, moving beyond simplistic interpretations of art as mere historical documentation. You'll examine how historical concepts and ideologies are visually expressed while questioning traditional notions of evidence.
By studying both disciplines together, you'll develop critical thinking skills particularly valuable in today's visually-driven society, gaining expertise in analyzing visual communication across historical contexts.
