The Usher Institute oversees postgraduate research students across diverse population health fields, such as epidemiology, genetic epidemiology, health promotion, health services research, medical statistics, molecular epidemiology, and sociology. Research topics span allergic and respiratory diseases, clinical trial and statistical methodologies, eHealth, ethnicity and health, genetic epidemiology of complex conditions, global health, palliative care and cancer, societal health, and family dynamics.

A key objective is to promote interdisciplinary research that combines quantitative and qualitative methods through strong partnerships with biomedical experts, epidemiologists, social scientists, and clinical researchers both within the University and externally.

Qualification Requirements

PhD: A UK 2:1 honours degree and a UK masters degree with a mark of at least 60%, or their international equivalents. We will also consider a UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent, and significant work experience in an area relevant to your research project.


IELTS Academic: total 6.5 with at least 6.0 in each component.
TOEFL-iBT (including Home Edition): total 92 with at least 20 in each component. We do not accept TOEFL MyBest Score to meet our English language requirements.
