Pursuing a doctorate allows you to create novel, impactful research contributions in Italian studies.

The University of Edinburgh has offered Italian studies since the 1700s. A dedicated lectureship began in 1919, and today the discipline encompasses a vibrant academic community including faculty, language instructors, and doctoral candidates.

We launched the Edinburgh Journal of Gadda Studies in 2000 and administer the prestigious international Edinburgh Gadda Prize. During our 100th anniversary in 2019, we organized the Society for Italian Studies' Biennial Conference.

Our research was included in Modern Languages for REF 2021, with outcomes confirming Edinburgh's status among Britain's top research institutions - ranking third nationally for Modern Languages research quality and scope in Times Higher Education's REF power rankings.
