This program is a collaborative effort between Edinburgh School of Architecture & Landscape Architecture and Heriot-Watt University's School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society, drawing upon their combined legacy of expertise. Students learn from globally engaged researchers who specialize in diverse urban topics and regions worldwide.
Contemporary teaching methods incorporate this extensive knowledge base into the curriculum. The program promotes a holistic strategy for achieving socially sustainable urban change, addressing interventions from neighborhood-level to global-scale projects.
The curriculum examines the complex interplay of social, economic, and political factors shaping modern urban spaces. Participants also develop practical skills to conceptualize urban initiatives of varying scope and focus.
With students hailing from various academic disciplines, the program fosters collaborative learning about urban planning responses to current city transformations. While employing Western analytical frameworks, it recognizes the growing connections between urban development in Global North and South contexts, creating opportunities to examine Southern urban perspectives.
Instructional methods include:
conventional lectures featuring policy and industry experts
discussion-based seminars
field trips
supplementary group work with digital learning support
Edinburgh serves as an exceptional case study for investigating modern urban design challenges. The city's revival of Geddesian planning traditions, combined with its international planning education connections - particularly with Global South institutions - creates an ideal foundation for student research projects.
The program bridges the divide between architecture-focused urban design and strategic spatial planning approaches. It integrates emerging urban design methodologies being developed across professional fields, from engineering to human geography.
