This program offers a systematic framework for foundational research training, enabling you to investigate potential PhD research areas. You might also establish connections with research initiatives at both national and global scales.
Our School boasts the UK's largest geoscience research community, comprising approximately 370 academics and researchers. Our research excellence was demonstrated in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise, where 66% of our work was classified as either world-leading or internationally outstanding.
Throughout the year, you'll engage in research while completing taught modules to strengthen your expertise. This structure requires 40 credits of coursework (with optional additional courses upon approval) alongside a 140-credit research project. The dissertation has a maximum limit of 23,000 words.
Degree conferral depends solely on dissertation evaluation. Although coursework grades don't impact the final result, you must maintain at least a 50% average in coursework to qualify for the degree.
You may select courses from any postgraduate offerings within the School of GeoSciences. With supervisor approval, you might also enroll in courses from other academic departments.
