The Institute for Energy Systems (IES) plays a pivotal role in guiding complex energy choices for a decarbonized future. It builds upon Edinburgh's legacy of groundbreaking innovations, such as the 1970s 'Duck' wave energy device created by Stephen Salter - currently Emeritus Professor of Engineering Design.
Our work spans the entire spectrum of sustainable energy solutions: from resource assessment and climate change effects to renewable technologies (wind, wave, tidal & solar), power conversion, energy storage, carbon capture, biofuels, and grid integration. We've also formed a specialized team focusing on low-emission vehicles and enhanced combustion engine efficiency. IES actively participates in two doctoral programs: leading the Industrial Centre for Offshore Renewable Energy (IDCORE) and collaborating with Strathclyde University on the Centre for Doctoral Training in Wind and Marine Energy.
