For over two and a half millennia, philosophy has formed the foundation of Western thought. Combining Scandinavian Studies with Philosophy provides insights into both modern society and historical perspectives.
Interest in Scandinavian languages and cultures continues to grow worldwide. The area's creative output in television, cinema, and literature receives international recognition, while the Nordic Model of social and economic organization attracts significant academic attention.

Our program enables you to achieve fluency in modern Danish, Norwegian, or Swedish while examining Scandinavian cultural heritage and contemporary developments.

No prior knowledge of Scandinavian languages is required, as we offer beginner-level instruction. By your third year, you'll be prepared for a full academic year abroad in Denmark, Norway, or Sweden.

While focusing on one primary Scandinavian language, you'll also develop comprehension

Philosophy cultivates the ability to examine fundamental existential questions with clarity, methodical reasoning, and systematic analysis.

Philosophy:

exposes you to influential philosophical thinkers throughout history and in contemporary times
reveals connections across various aspects of human existence
enhances awareness of the foundational principles underlying personal beliefsof our other two degree-level language offerings. In your second year, you might examine the linguistic relationships between Danish, Swedish, and Norwegian.

Standard entry requirement
The standard entry requirement is:

SQA Highers: AAAB-ABBB by end of S5 or AAAA-AABB/ABBBB by end of S6. BBB must be achieved in one year of S4-S6.
A Levels: ABB.
IB: 36 points with 665 at HL - 34 points with 655 at HL.
Minimum entry requirement
The minimum entry requirement for widening access applicants is:

SQA Highers: ABBB by end of S6. BBB must be achieved in one year of S4-S6.
A Levels: ABB.
IB: 34 points with 655 at HL.
IELTS Academic: total 6.5 with at least 5.5 in each component.
TOEFL-iBT (including Home Edition): total 92 with at least 20 in each component. We do not accept TOEFL MyBest Score to meet our English language requirements.
