This program provides you with the chance to explore the languages, literature, and cultures of Celtic regions while also studying Scottish literature in both Scots and English.

Celtic Studies
In Celtic studies, we examine medieval Gaelic and Welsh literary traditions (among Europe's most extensive), the vibrant oral traditions documented from the 18th century onward, and poetry from Gaelic literature's 18th-century golden age.

We investigate 19th and 20th-century reactions to rapid social, cultural, and linguistic shifts in Celtic-speaking regions, while also engaging with contemporary creative works—including writing, music, and media—emerging from the dynamic cultural landscapes of Gaelic Scotland, Ireland, and Wales.

Scottish Gaelic Focus
Scottish Gaelic forms the core of Celtic studies at the University of Edinburgh, with opportunities to study modern Irish and medieval Celtic languages at advanced levels.

Our curriculum includes language, literature, history, and culture courses at all levels, allowing you to tailor your studies by focusing on specific areas, historical periods, or disciplinary approaches within Celtic studies.

Scottish Literature Component
The Scottish literature portion of the program enhances students' critical, analytical, linguistic, and creative abilities through diverse texts and interpretive methods.

You'll develop expertise in English and Scots literary history from the 14th century to today, studying works from key periods including medieval, renaissance, 18th-century, romantic, Victorian, modern, and contemporary (post-1945) literature.
