Explore Celtic studies at the University of Edinburgh and immerse yourself in vibrant cultures, languages, and literary traditions spanning from medieval times to the modern era.
Our program engages with Early Irish and Medieval Welsh literature (Europe's most extensive medieval traditions) alongside Scottish Gaelic works from the late medieval period onward. We examine preserved oral traditions dating back to the 18th century and celebrate the poetic brilliance of Gaelic literature's golden age.
You'll analyze 19th and 20th century cultural adaptations to societal transformations in Celtic-speaking regions. The curriculum also covers modern creative expressions - including literature, music, and media - emerging from Scotland, Ireland, and Wales' dynamic Gaelic communities.
Our specialists address both theoretical and practical aspects of contemporary sociolinguistics, language planning, and revitalization efforts.
