In 2019, Edinburgh's Spanish program marked its 100-year anniversary, offering comprehensive courses led by top specialists that introduce students to the vibrant cultures of Spain, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

Through rigorous language instruction, including a mandatory year overseas, students cultivate advanced abilities in speaking, writing, reading, and translating Spanish.

The curriculum immerses students in a remarkable variety of global literature, cinema, poetry, and theater, all examined within their historical frameworks.

Students develop skills to identify various Spanish dialects and registers while acquiring essential intercultural understanding.

Political science examines the principles and implementation of societal governance. It explores how political systems establish collective regulations, the distribution of decision-making authority, and the impacts of policy choices. The discipline also investigates concepts of an equitable society and pathways to achieve it.

Utilizing insights from prominent scholars, the program analyzes both historical roots and contemporary manifestations of conflicts surrounding authority, civic engagement, and resource allocation. Students examine governance mechanisms across local, national, and global scales while evaluating ethical dimensions of political behavior and the boundaries of liberty and fairness.
