Sculpture fosters both material understanding and critical thinking through diverse methods relevant to today's broad sculptural practices. Our specialized studios function as both creative workspaces and gallery areas. Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) offers outstanding workshop resources, including a foundry, with expert technical support for woodwork, metalwork, mold creation, casting, and carving. Students can also utilize sound, digital imaging, and video editing facilities. We emphasize the importance of being part of a vibrant, creative community where shared energy fuels artistic growth. Our sculpture faculty bring diverse research expertise that enriches teaching and informs discussions about creating and presenting student work. We embrace an expansive view of sculpture within contemporary art, encouraging exploration at both the discipline's boundaries and its center. At ECA, visual culture offers an interdisciplinary framework for all art programs, involving creative investigation, analysis, and discussion of cultural visual elements. Students participate in thoughtful exchanges with peers while developing awareness of modern visual cultures. The program examines the artistic, intellectual, social, and professional dimensions influencing visual arts practice, teaching effective communication of this knowledge through various written, spoken, visual, and practical methods.
