This interdisciplinary course explores how capitalist neoliberalism has influenced development. It investigates neoliberal policies from the past three decades and their consequences for urban design, real estate markets, building aesthetics, and social equity. While housed in the architecture department, we encourage applications from diverse academic and professional backgrounds.
The program consists of four core components: Understanding the Neoliberal City, Psychogeography and Situationist Theory, Responsible Development, and Smart Cities. Key areas of examination include urban housing shortages, city privatization trends, financial dynamics in metropolitan spaces, social divisions, and their effects on public confidence and security. The Responsible Development and Smart Cities segments explore possible solutions beyond neoliberal urban models. Our architecture program is located at UEL's Docklands campus, a prime example of neoliberal urban transformation and a living laboratory for course research. While London serves as our primary case study, we examine these phenomena through a global lens, recognizing their worldwide relevance.
This MRes in Architecture attracts international professionals and students involved in shaping urban spaces - including designers, urban strategists, real estate professionals, and community advocates.
The program caters to active professionals while also supporting career changers or those re-entering the workforce by strengthening essential analytical and writing competencies vital for professional success.
Participants will refine their critical analysis and writing abilities while expanding their architectural perspective to urban dimensions. The curriculum deepens understanding of European urban renewal challenges and equips students to navigate professional obstacles like gender barriers in the field.
Part-time academics in built environment disciplines will gain from this rigorous writing-focused qualification that enhances university teaching credentials.

This program prepares participants for doctoral research by elevating their analytical, writing, and presentation skills to PhD-entry standards.

The exacting standards cultivated through this course represent a valuable professional asset. By concentrating on urban renewal strategies and municipal governance structures, the program provides critical knowledge for contemporary city-making practices.
