The School of Psychology fosters a dynamic research environment, building upon strong foundations in both theoretical and practical studies. A doctoral degree represents a novel and significant advancement in your chosen field, typically serving as a prerequisite for academic or research-oriented professions. PhD studies are available across all disciplines.
Each postgraduate research candidate receives mentorship from a minimum of two actively engaged faculty members. Your advisors will provide ongoing assistance through scheduled consultations and progress evaluations.
The doctoral program generally requires at least 3 years of full-time study or 5 years for part-time students.
Upon completing your PhD, you must present an 80,000-word dissertation encapsulating your findings, followed by an oral defense (viva voce) of your work.

Qualification Requirements

Master's degree in a related subject. Bachelor's degree with minimum Upper Second Class (2:1) or equivalent in a related subject. Applicants will need to provide an academic reference.
We accept a wide range of European and international qualifications in addition to A-levels, the International Baccalaureate and BTEC qualifications.
As an inclusive university, we recognise those who have been out of education for some time may not have the formal qualifications usually required. We welcome applications from those who can demonstrate their enthusiasm and commitment to study and have the relevant life/work experience that equips them to succeed on the course. We will assess this from the information provided in your application or may request additional information such as a CV or attendance at an interview.

Overall Academic IELTS 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in Writing and Speaking, minimum 6.0 in Reading and Listening (or recognised equivalent).
