Stage and Screen Directing is designed for individuals passionate about directing in both theater and film/television, as well as those interested in creating audio-visual components for live performances.
This program is available at MA and MFA levels, with the MA being a one-year program and the MFA requiring an additional year of advanced study. Select your preferred qualification when applying via the application button.
The MFA/MA in Stage and Screen Directing employs a hands-on approach, examining various directing techniques across mediums - including Realism, Narrative Cinema, Moving Image, Contemporary Devising, and Screenwriting.
You'll develop the expertise to become an inventive director in film and theater, with opportunities to refine your craft by bringing creative concepts to life on stage or screen.

This course prepares you for diverse roles in the creative sector or serves as a foundation for doctoral research. You'll acquire the abilities, insights, and knowledge to establish yourself as a film/theater director, playwright, screenwriter, or independent creative producer. Additionally, you'll establish a pathway toward PhD studies that can integrate your practical work as a research focus.

Qualification Requirements

Bachelor's degree with minimum Second Class (2:1) or equivalent in Theatre/Performance studies or related subject.
We accept a wide range of European and international qualifications in addition to A-levels, the International Baccalaureate and BTEC qualifications.
As an inclusive university, we recognise those who have been out of education for some time may not have the formal qualifications usually required. We welcome applications from those who can demonstrate their enthusiasm and commitment to study and have the relevant life/work experience that equips them to succeed on the course. We will assess this from the information provided in your application or may request additional information such as a CV or attendance at an interview.

Overall IELTS 6.0 with minimum 6.0 in writing and speaking, and 5.5 in listening and reading (or recognised equivalent).
