Contemporary Performance Practices transcends conventional boundaries to examine how performance can address societal, environmental, and ecological shifts and crises. This program delivers a customized educational experience, equipping graduates with skills for emerging roles in the performing arts sector. The coursework emphasizes a vibrant mix of critical analysis and hands-on practice across diverse artistic fields—from avant-garde theater, music, and dance to community-driven initiatives, live art, interactive performances, sound installations, and beyond. Students engage with a wide spectrum of concepts, methods, and formats while having the freedom to concentrate on their personal passions. As part of the program, participants investigate innovative, cross-disciplinary performance techniques and craft original pieces culminating in a distinctive final project—a performance-based exploration of a chosen topic.
Since 2016, alumni of the MA Contemporary Performance Practices have successfully obtained project funding, established artist collectives, launched international initiatives, founded festivals, organized interdisciplinary gatherings, and showcased their work at various festivals, venues, and conferences. UEL provides an MFA pathway for this program, along with opportunities to advance to doctoral studies.
