The BA (Hons) Dance: Urban Practice is an innovative program that has grown steadily in national and international recognition since its launch in 2007. This energetic and unique course provides students the opportunity to learn from an accomplished, specialized dance faculty in East London's thriving cultural center. The program is also available with an optional foundation year, extending it to four years.
Our curriculum explores hip-hop, club, social, and popular dance forms alongside contemporary techniques from Europe, Africa, and Asia. From popping and locking to contemporary and capoeira, from afro-house to bharata natyam, our program remains pioneering in offering a boundary-free dance degree.
Students gain valuable performance experience through our annual student-run festival, studio showcases, and external engagements. Our faculty mentors support students in honing their abilities as researchers, choreographers, performers, and event managers while providing networking opportunities through our extensive industry connections.
We cultivate versatile dance professionals ready for multifaceted arts careers. You'll engage in theoretical study, creative collaboration, and dance production while exploring diverse movement styles.
A key strength of our three-year program lies in its exceptional diversity of both academic and practical components.

You'll merge theory and practice as you develop performances addressing political, cultural, and artistic themes.
The curriculum encompasses numerous dance forms including hip-hop, club styles, funk, capoeira, African contemporary, Afro-house, bharata natyam, kathak, and kalaripayattu.
Our comprehensive approach ensures graduates emerge as well-rounded dance professionals with versatile skill sets.

Many alumni successfully pursue multifaceted careers in teaching, choreography, performance, and arts management.
Through internships, dance administration studies, and community dance initiatives, students gain exceptional preparation for professional life in the dance field.
