The Atlantic Ocean presents no obstacle to literary exchange. Indeed, grasping British Literature in modern times or American Literature across any era requires familiarity with both nations' cultural landscapes.

At UEA, you'll concentrate on Anglo-American literary connections while also examining broader dimensions of English and American writing, from pre-19th century English works to Native American and diverse ethnic narratives.

Guided by our internationally renowned experts in English Literature and American Studies, you'll explore the rich literary traditions of both nations. Your academic journey will span from Chaucer and Julian of Norwich to modern luminaries like Kazuo Ishiguro, Ian McEwan, and Ali Smith. You'll examine contrasting voices ranging from Walt Whitman to Sylvia Plath, from Bret Easton Ellis to Edith Wharton. Following a comprehensive first-year foundation, you'll delve into specialized fields such as contemporary fiction, journalism, or graphic narratives.
