Our English Literature program offers comprehensive exploration of literary studies, drawing from our faculty's specialized knowledge across diverse fields such as American literature, Irish studies, postcolonial works, critical theory, creative writing, and interdisciplinary connections between literature, arts, media, and sciences. Students enjoy privileged access to our exceptional Hunterian and Library resources, featuring remarkable collections focused on 18th- and 19th-century works, travel literature, illuminated manuscripts, and important author-specific archives.
The curriculum begins with poetry studies before transitioning to narrative prose. Throughout the program, students cultivate essential abilities in critical analysis, creative composition, and literary argumentation while discovering how performance and oral interpretation enrich textual understanding. Both courses present a rich variety of texts spanning different historical periods and cultural contexts, with additional opportunities to hone creative writing skills in both poetry and fiction.
An English Literature degree commands significant respect across employment sectors, valued not only in traditional fields like arts, education, and media but also in public relations, financial services, business, and technology industries. Our graduates develop future-ready competencies including persuasive argument construction, cognitive adaptability, collaborative skills, innovative thinking, and analytical reasoning. With dedicated career support services, we actively prepare students for diverse professional pathways.
