The Leverhulme Research Centre for Forensic Science seeks to transform the forensic science landscape through positive innovation. Our mission spans multiple dimensions, working to renew, refine, and reinforce the reliability and trustworthiness of scientific evidence in legal proceedings.
While forensic science applies scientific principles to courtroom contexts, increasing concerns have emerged about the weak scientific basis supporting certain forensic evidence. LRCFS focuses on identifying these knowledge gaps, improving scientific rigor, and pioneering novel approaches to tackle emerging challenges in forensic science and criminal justice.
We've assembled a diverse team of researchers from various disciplines to reimagine solutions for the complex issues surrounding forensic evidence in modern legal systems.
Our active research initiatives encompass:
Evidence transfer and persistence dynamics
Advancements in DNA profiling techniques
Forensic science education and professional development
Improved detection methods for illegal substances, explosives, and biological traces
Virtual Reality applications for forensic training and collaboration
Studying the natural prevalence of forensic materials in environments.
