Merging philosophy with film studies offers a diverse selection of modules to explore.
Philosophy examines human existence through critical analysis and reasoned debate. Our focus lies in continental (European) philosophy, where we examine seminal works from this intellectual tradition.
We demonstrate philosophy's relevance to modern challenges and current affairs by:
analyzing films and artistic works
examining significant scientific and technological advancements
deliberating contentious moral dilemmas
demonstrating how centuries-old texts remain pertinent to today's political landscape
During Levels 1 and 2, you'll establish foundations in both ancient and contemporary philosophy while learning core concepts about ethics, epistemology (the study of knowledge), and metaphysics (the nature of existence).
At Levels 3 and 4, you'll specialize by selecting from various philosophy courses taught by faculty engaged in cross-disciplinary research.
Our film curriculum begins with cinema's origins, covering essential techniques and genres before progressing to Hollywood classics, global film movements, and Film Noir. Building on these fundamentals, we then investigate subjects such as:
artistic cinema
cinematic theory
the connections between film and theater, and film and literature
