This four-year British Psychological Society-accredited program builds upon the Psychology and Language Sciences BSc by adding an additional year. In their final year, students can pursue extra research experience, either within a UCL research team or in a practical environment. The initial two years focus on core modules shared by all students, delivering comprehensive training in psychology and language sciences. These foundational courses explore essential subjects including the neurological foundations of perception, memory and language, social psychology, personality studies, speech mechanisms, and the evolution of communication and cognitive abilities. Research methodology modules and lab sessions in years one and two teach experimental design, execution, and analysis skills.
During their second year, students undertake weekly child observation placements in early childhood settings (requiring DBS clearance). This compulsory component helps refine observational research methods while connecting theoretical developmental frameworks of play and language to actual observations.
