This program centers on an interdisciplinary field combining physics, engineering, life sciences, and computer science. The PhD requires 3-4 years (or longer for part-time candidates) of innovative research under the guidance of a departmental faculty member.
In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF), the department's research within UCL Engineering achieved 97% "world-leading" (4) or "internationally excellent" (3) ratings, with UCL ranking second in the UK for research impact. PhD initiatives will emphasize cross-disciplinary approaches, connecting engineering, clinical sciences, and industry. More than 100 clinical and non-clinical researchers across UCL will collaborate to mentor a new generation of professionals poised to revolutionize healthcare and advance UK industry. As an interdisciplinary field bridging physics, engineering, life sciences, and computer science, our graduates pursue diverse career paths. Numerous alumni progress in academia through PhD positions or postdoctoral research roles.
