This program centers on an interdisciplinary field combining physics, engineering, life sciences, and computer science. The PhD requires 3-4 years (or longer for part-time candidates) of innovative research under the guidance of a departmental faculty member.

In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF), the department's research within UCL Engineering achieved 97% "world-leading" (4) or "internationally excellent" (3) ratings, with UCL ranking second in the UK for research impact. PhD initiatives will emphasize cross-disciplinary approaches, connecting engineering, clinical sciences, and industry. Qualification Requirements

A minimum of an upper second-class UK Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or another closely related discipline, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard. Knowledge and expertise gained in the workplace may also be considered, where appropriate. Overall grade of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each of the subtests. Overall score of 92 with 24/30 in reading and writing and 20/30 in speaking and listening.
