Pursuing an MPhil or PhD at the Institute of Cardiovascular Science (ICS), whether full-time or part-time, allows you to explore cardiovascular disease from fundamental research to clinical applications, guided by globally renowned academic experts. Our students benefit from collaborative partnerships among scientists, clinicians, and healthcare industries worldwide, fostering valuable networking connections and career advancement. This cardiovascular research degree is housed within UCL's Institute of Cardiovascular Science (ICS).

You'll become part of a vibrant PhD program involving nearly 100 students working across diverse cardiovascular disciplines, from foundational science to clinical and population health studies.

This program enables you to engage with a multidisciplinary research environment, connecting you with cardiovascular specialists who collaborate across engineering, imaging, anatomy, nanotechnology, chemistry, and genetics—opening doors to opportunities in research, pharmaceuticals, and related sectors. Our research spans laboratory-based discovery, clinical translation, experimental medicine, healthcare assessment, implementation strategies, and policy development. At ICS, we investigate key areas such as medical device innovation, cardiomyopathies, arrhythmias, ischaemic preconditioning, advanced imaging techniques, and regenerative therapies. Additionally, our team includes researchers specializing in cardiovascular genetics, epidemiology, and preventive medicine.

Qualification Requirements

A minimum of an upper second-class UK Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate subject or a medical degree, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard, or a recognised taught Master’s degree. Overall grade of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in each of the subtests. Overall score of 100 with 24/30 in reading and writing and 20/30 in speaking and listening.
