Gain the expertise required to build a career in translation while specializing in your preferred areas of translation and intercultural studies. The Translation: Research MA program offers diverse translation modules, encompassing both theoretical and technological subjects, along with advanced language courses. Studying at UCL provides access to interdisciplinary scholars and language professionals. This program lets you select from multiple translation pathways, including theory, technology, and language studies. The dissertation component offers a tailored chance to cultivate independent critical thinking by researching and composing an in-depth paper on a subject of your choosing.

Students can take optional advanced translation courses in these languages: Dutch, Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Scandinavian languages, and Spanish. Language-specific module options are also available (subject to scheduling). The course listings detail the languages offered, typically featuring numerous European languages plus Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and Russian. Ukrainian language modules may also be available (please consult the MA director for current offerings).

Qualification Requirements

A minimum of a first or high upper second-class Bachelor's degree (average 65%) in a relevant discipline from a UK university, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard. Students should only translate out of a language in which they have an advanced level minimum and should only translate into a language in which they have native-level proficiency (language combinations subject to availability). The English language level for this programme is: Level 4

UCL Pre-Master's and Pre-sessional English courses are for international students who are aiming to study for a postgraduate degree at UCL. The courses will develop your academic English and academic skills required to succeed at postgraduate level. International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic Version - Overall score of 7.5 and a minimum of 7.0 in each component. Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) - Overall score of 109 with 27/30 in reading and writing and 23/30 in speaking and listening.
