The Master of Arts in Public History enables students to examine how historical narratives are constructed and interpreted in public spheres. This program provides opportunities to investigate history through diverse mediums such as museums, heritage sites, cultural institutions, media platforms, technological innovations, and even the gaming industry. Featuring advanced instruction from prominent experts, the curriculum is offered at both UCL's innovative East campus and traditional Bloomsbury location. The MA in Public History merges contemporary, research-driven insights about historical production in public domains with practical training in crafting and disseminating public historical knowledge.
This Public History program adopts a uniquely international and cross-disciplinary perspective. Students will primarily study at UCL East, collaborating with peers in allied disciplines like global urban studies, heritage conservation, creative humanities, and media analysis. The curriculum begins by investigating evolving definitions of public history across different global settings, addressing core themes and discussions surrounding collective memory, cultural preservation, historical activism, commercial applications of history, policy implications, institutional and communal remembrance practices, as well as artistic expressions of commemoration.
