Enhance your knowledge of Scandinavian culture within a worldwide framework while mastering a Nordic language through this program. The Language, Culture and History: Scandinavian Studies MA is offered at UCL, which hosts the UK's leading center for Scandinavian studies and one of the finest Scandinavian libraries beyond the Nordic region. You can also develop or refine your proficiency in Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, Norwegian, or Swedish. This program enables students to deeply explore the Nordic world from multiple perspectives, such as gaining advanced translation expertise, analyzing Nordic cinema, examining Nordic literature globally, investigating the region's transnational politics, and studying material cultures alongside Viking and medieval Scandinavia. Evaluated coursework is complemented by workshops that offer networking and career advancement opportunities in fields like publishing, translation, film production, and the heritage and creative industries.
Students with little or no prior experience in a Scandinavian language (Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, Icelandic, or Old Norse) may, with approval from program and module leaders, audit a suitable undergraduate-level Scandinavian language course. Note that this module does not contribute credit toward the MA degree requirements.
