Our History MA program offers a distinctive selection of courses focused on the SSEES region (Central, Eastern, and Southeast Europe along with Russia). You'll study periods from early modern history to contemporary times, examining territories where powerful empires and diverse nations have intersected and vied for influence through the ages - including the Russian Empire, Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Habsburg Monarchy, Ottoman Empire, German Empire, and their successor states. Our student body represents diverse academic backgrounds. While some arrive with prior regional studies experience, others are new to Central/Eastern European and Russian studies. We accept students with knowledge of regional languages and motivate those without language skills to begin studying one, though this remains optional.
UCL's School of Slavonic & East European Studies (SSEES) ranks among the UK's premier institutions for Central/Eastern European, Southeast European, and Russian studies. Our specialized library resources and central London setting create perfect research conditions, while our strong ties with employers, policymakers, embassies, and graduates offer exceptional networking and career advancement possibilities.
