This program explores the cultures, societies, and physical artifacts of ancient Greek and Roman civilizations. Participants will engage in 70 days of partially-subsidized fieldwork, encompassing excavation, museum studies, research, and digital archaeology. Classical Archaeology & Classical Civilisation BA candidates may opt for a six-week Mediterranean Field Study Tour as part of their fieldwork (also partially funded). This tour involves individual or group visits to Mediterranean sites and museums, enabling direct examination of ancient locations and artifacts to support final-year dissertation research. Students can alternatively select the standard 70-day fieldwork option or combine a shorter Mediterranean Study Tour with additional fieldwork.
The curriculum establishes core knowledge in archaeological methods, field techniques, and contemporary archaeological debates centered on themes like landscapes, material culture, social transformation, and societal structures. Additionally, students will study an ancient language (Greek or Latin) at either introductory or advanced levels.
