Founded in 2016, the Institute traces its roots to 2011 when its founding members organized a one-day symposium to assess interest in gender studies throughout the University.
As anticipated by the team, significant cross-disciplinary interest emerged, leading to the biennial Talking Bodies conferences hosted at the University in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2023.
At its heart, the Institute of Gender Studies champions inclusivity and interdisciplinary collaboration. The team strives to create opportunities not just for experienced researchers and professionals in the field, but also for undergraduate and postgraduate students from diverse academic backgrounds.
Beyond hosting regular seminar programs, the Institute provides a groundbreaking MRes (Masters by Research) program. As the first such degree in the area, it supports, educates, and inspires students exploring gender studies - whether they're completing their undergraduate studies and considering next steps, or community members returning to academia after time away. Additionally, the Institute serves as a central hub for doctoral candidates whose research intersects with gender studies.
