Translational Health Sciences operates within Bristol Medical School, with faculty and students working across top-tier research and clinical facilities throughout the city. These locations include the Bristol Royal Infirmary, Southmead Hospital, and the cutting-edge laboratories in the Dorothy Hodgkin Building. The school conducts diverse research spanning laboratory investigations, translational studies, and applied projects, promoting strong partnerships between researchers and students. It brings together both basic scientists and clinician-scientists, facilitating collaborative translational and healthcare research that employs various methodologies, from molecular biology to population health studies.
Our primary emphasis lies in clinical research, much of which has progressed to school-led clinical trials. Current trial areas include:
heart surgery techniques
ocular inflammation treatments
pediatric immunization and antimicrobial approaches
obesity management in children and adults
diabetic nerve damage therapies
early-stage Alzheimer's interventions
surgical treatments for Parkinson's disease
immune-based and stem cell therapies for multiple sclerosis
newborn brain injury treatments
type 1 diabetes prevention strategies
enhancing joint replacement results
innovative steroid treatments for critical care and inflammatory conditions
kidney disorder therapies
pleural disease management.
These investigations are supported by translational clinical research involving both medical and basic science researchers. Our broad network of national and international partnerships with industry and academic institutions creates an exceptional environment for interdisciplinary research and education.
