The outstanding quality of Bristol's social science research was reaffirmed by the recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021). The Times Higher Education's REF 2021 analysis revealed that The School of Geographical Sciences maintained its top position in the UK for five consecutive assessment cycles.
Our diverse and dynamic postgraduate community engages in both research-based PhDs and structured degree programs. With an international, cross-disciplinary composition, we provide an outstanding scholarly setting for advanced research. Notably, all UKRI-funded PhD candidates have successfully completed their programs within the last five years.
Research possibilities encompass diverse subjects at the forefront of geographical studies. Our research clusters address various aspects of human geography, including the History and Culture Research Group, the Geographies of Political Economy Research Group, and the Quantitative Spatial Science Research Group. These groups facilitate postgraduate investigations across a broad spectrum - from disparities in health and housing to posthuman geographical theories, from sustainable urban development to environmental humanities, from refining quantitative modeling and machine learning methods to geopolitical studies, decolonial geography, and political ecology.
Numerous stimulating opportunities exist for cross-disciplinary research that bridges different research clusters and academic departments. We support collaborative supervision across multiple schools and faculties.
