Translation involves people just as much as it involves texts. Through their work, translators become agents of change. The online MA Translation program helps you discover your unique voice as a translator, master translation technologies with confidence, examine ethical considerations when working with clients and peers, and strengthen your entrepreneurial abilities. Available in French, German, Italian, Mandarin Chinese, Russian, Spanish, and Portuguese, the program focuses on translating from these languages into English. Students are encouraged to study multiple languages.
This MA Translation program is part of an elite group of global programs officially accredited by the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL), which praises it as:
'A curriculum deeply rooted in both academic and professional environments, offering outstanding preparation for linguists pursuing a translation career. By incorporating current practices, emerging trends, and future language specializations, the program anticipates shifts in the translation industry that will impact aspiring translators. Students can trust they will graduate with the professional expertise and knowledge needed to enter the translation field fully prepared.'
Additionally, the program holds corporate membership with the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI).
In this online program, instruction and learning primarily occur through asynchronous, interactive seminar groups led by experts in language and community, CAT tools and machine translation, subtitling, multilingualism, poetry, theory, translation services, and video game localization and accessibility. Many tutors bring extensive industry experience and continue working as translators while teaching. Our digital library offers an extensive collection of e-books and e-journals on translation.
Our student community is remarkably diverse, including recent graduates, language industry professionals, and those seeking a career shift. Asynchronous learning is ideal for students balancing family or work responsibilities with their studies.
Alongside asynchronous core units, academic and personal tutors provide optional live meetings, and student interaction is encouraged through a virtual common room. Each year, we host online talks and seminars. While campus visits are not required, you are fully recognized as a University member, and we would be thrilled to welcome you to Bristol should you wish to visit.
