This program provides a solid grounding in biomedical research, strengthening your grasp of scientific methods while developing critical thinking skills. You'll gain hands-on experience in your chosen field through structured coursework covering research techniques, study design, statistical methods, and data evaluation. The curriculum also prioritizes developing both oral and written communication abilities.
At its heart lies an intensive eight-month research project undertaken with one of the University's world-renowned research teams. You can pursue either laboratory or clinical investigations. Prospective students with particular research interests should consult the Program Directors during the application process.
Ideal candidates include medical, dental, and veterinary students seeking a research-focused intercalation year after three years of study, as well as graduates in medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, or biosciences looking to enhance their research capabilities.
Translational Cardiovascular Medicine specialization
Those focusing on cardiovascular medicine can pursue the MRes Health Sciences Research (Translational Cardiovascular Medicine). Alongside the standard curriculum (excluding the Project Proposal), students select two from these options:
Coronary Artery Disease I
Coronary Artery Disease II
Heart and Valve Disease
Paediatric Heart Disease
Aneurysm, Peripheral Vascular Disease and Stroke.
All research projects in this track center on cardiovascular themes.
Renal specialization
Students concentrating on renal medical sciences can enroll in the MRes Health Sciences Research (Renal). This pathway includes the Introduction to Renal Sciences unit alongside the standard coursework (minus Project Proposal).
Research projects here focus exclusively on renal topics, ranging from basic bioscience investigations to translational studies or population health research (conducted in collaboration with the UK Renal Registry). An optional clinical placement allows observation of adult or pediatric nephrology practice in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
